GEOGRAPHY FAR FROM HOME

A teenager, he wanted to pick up a high and distant cloud, white
cotton, to cover the winter wheat.
Time left a handful of firewood. Mother squandered all the well water.
The teenager grew taller than the rice, opened ten acres of sesame on South Slope.

Prospects, on the bus ticket, coming soon.
White clouds, in the blue sky, growing. Nobody picking cotton.

The teenager. Uneasy. The train a step faster than walking.
The teenager. Silent. The language of sleep. A stone in the heart. Rolling forward.
The teenager. Remembering mother’s maxims, the well water,
and secret cares buried deep.

He dithered, didn’t dare get on a stamp to go home.
He – he wrote a letter:
Bus 662, on the Baoshi Road, knocked into him.
The Grand Bright Electronics Factory, it owed him his wages.
        In Southtown,
the flash of a kitchen knife.

Jongen. Rusteloos. Net iets sneller dan een rijdende trein.
Jongen. Zwijgzaam. In slaap gevallen taal. Een steen in het hart. Voortrollend.
Jongeman.
