Poem
Jan Lauwereyns
MIRACLE OF SLEEP
After a few moments he perceiveshis mouth is wide open.
The son of the natural philosopher
understands, obedient as he is,
that he has opened it.
Her?
La bouche.
Issue to breathe in
as gently as possible.
(Baby sleeps.)
Breath: the umpteenth in/ex-
halation of the indefatigable muse
who will not turn to stone,
nor go up in smoke,
not even make a U-turn.

Slaapwonder
Slaapwonder
Na enige ogenblikken neemt hij waardat zijn mond wijdelijk open is.
De zoon van de natuurfilosoof
begrijpt, gehoorzaam als hij is,
dat hij hem geopend heeft.
Haar?
La bouche.
Zaak zo zacht
mogelijk adem in te halen.
(Baby slaapt.)
Adem: de zoveelste in/ont-
spanning van de onvermoeibare muze
die niet zal verstenen,
ook niet in rook opgaan,
niet eens een U-turn maken.
