GNOMON
Stick a stick in the ground,A bolt-upright stick in a small piece
of billiard-table-flat ground.
Stick: pole, erection.
Wait for the sun and note the way
your measuring instrument stands steadfast
in the light of the heat.
Bright air, brilliant fire
but what matters/counts is the shadow,
the unveiling of the earth.

Gnomon
Gnomon
Steek een stok in de grond, een kaarsrechte stok in een stukje
biljarttafelvlakke grond.
Stok: paal, erectie.
Wacht op de zon en stel vast
hoe je meetinstrument zich kranig houdt
in het licht van de warmte.
Heldere hemel, schitterend vuur
maar het is hem/jou om de schaduw te doen,
de ontsluiering van de aarde.
