Fisherman\'s song
Visserlied
Wat is het droevig voor een visserals hij over de diepte vaart
en tussen terugwijkende netten
naar vreemde bloemen staart
die eerst nog lijken op wat blaaswier
maar kijkt hij er beter naar
dan is wat in het vuile brijn drijft
een kluwen mensenhaar.
En met welk lied moet deze visser
bij het slapengaan
zijn kinderen de nacht in loodsen,
als vage vormen voor het raam
van de nacht een grommend monster maken
dat alleen vader kan verslaan
en wie loodst de visser veilig thuis
als hij over de diepte vaart?

What sadness for a fishermanto navigate the blue
and find among receding nets
strange, underwater blooms
that look, at first, like bladderwrack
but from a closer view
are clumps of matted human hair
atop an acrid soup.
And what song shall this fisherman
who loves a jaunty tune
sing to lullaby his children
when dark shapes in their room
make the night a snarling monster
only father’s voice can soothe
and who will soothe the fisherman
who navigates the blue?
