Poem
Benjamin Shvili
have pity on me
have pity on me because all the way from Tel Avivto Jerusalem
I am thinking about the sources of my income in the heart of
NON
and the day quickly swallows me (with sources
of income)
on the bus sweet is the sleep of the lost
I cannot
fall asleep
oh me
what’s so terrible
without income
© Translation: 2012, Lisa Katz
In the Hebrew original, the text reads: “in the heart of/ NON” (beh-lev ha/ NON; with "NON" written in English in capital letters). However, "beh-lev ha/ NON" obviously also means "in Lebanon", the site of a long war.
have pity on me
