OUR ROOM WILL BE

Our room will be light and spacious
And in it only a bed, a potted plant,
Your footprints on the white floor
And marks of wing-beats on walls and ceiling.

You’ll enter when the day is over, smiling.
You’ll look for the end of the thread and pull –
Slack at first and growing tauter
All of a sudden, you’re a woman in a room and a thread
Leads out of the window

Where I pull the other way, played by the wind, a prophet
Of sparrows and TV antennae, what did I see today
Ask softly and reel in, reel in, feel
Me getting closer, crying out as if all I truly wanted

Was to fly in the open and never return but you
Draw in gently, gather me through the blinds –
A bat whose ties you have released, now he’s
Yours, he says how lovely are your footprints from the ficus to the bed
You had two messages, I couldn’t find a plumber, and all in all everything
Suddenly changed when you left,
I’m glad you came.

יהיה לנו חדר
