Biography

Elfie Tromp (born 1985) is a Dutch poet, writer and musical theater producer. She studied psychology and playwriting. In 2023-2024 she was Poet Laureate of the city of Rotterdam. Her first collection is called Victorieverdriet. She previously wrote three novels, for which she was nominated with the BNG Literature Prize and the Dioraphte Literature Prize.

CPNB crowned her ‘summer poet’ of 2020. October 2021 saw the publication of her new novel Pièta, a compelling mosaic narrative about a city under pressure. In a country that could be ours, there is a statue of a controversial general. There are those who want that statue gone. There are also those who want it left standing at all costs. A mysterious boy climbs into the statue. And then the situation comes to a head.

Her work is characterized by collage techniques and feminist and activist touches. She often works across genres and forms, with her novels containing theatrical forms and her poems containing song structures. She ran her own literary magazine called Strak (‘Tight’), adhering to the phrase: masturbate for yourself, write for the reader. During the pandemic, she ran an online talk show on Instagram called Dichter in Drag (‘Poet in Drag’), reading poetry with drag artists. In her work, she adheres to the Nieuwe Zakelijkheid (‘New Objectivity’, a literary style practiced by multiple writers from Rotterdam).
