Poem
Mustafa Stitou
CINEMA
in a timeof all-consuming drought
in a time
when a farmer does his sums
takes straw to a car
abandoned on his land
father leaves as a child
with his uncle the deserter
for nine pesetas in the back
of the camiona – armpits
off the metal – going to Tetouan,
tiny Tetouan with its reliable souk
in the rigour of the mosque's austerity
they pray sluggish and sighing
after jobs in gnawing sun
drink water from the water seller
with the sad grin and cool off
in the Spanish cinema with sunflower seeds
it rained in the movie
Allah el Akbar it rained
rain rain rain and I thought
rain was falling everywhere outside
evokes Father fidgeting
with the remote control
outside
stone trembles
wind melts
lips harden to beaks
and people die
that sun-drenched summer

Cinema
in een tijdvan verterende droogte
in een tijd
waarin een boer een automobiel
verlaten op zijn land
stro brengt uit berekening
vertrekt vader als jongetje
met zijn gedeserteerde oom
voor negen pesetas in de laadbak
van de camiona – oksels
van het metaal – naar Tetouan
het kleine Tetouan met de betrouwbare soek
in de vurige sobere moskee
bidden zij loom en zuchtend
na de klusjes in de vretende zon
zij drinken water van de waterverkoper
die triest grijnst en koelen af
in de Spaanse cinema met zonnepitten
het regende in de film
Allah el Akbar het regende
regen regen regen en ik dacht
regen viel buiten overal
verbeeldt vader spelend
met de remote control
buiten
siddert steen
smelt wind
worden lippen snavels
komen mensen om
die hongerzomer
