Elly de Waard

So afraid was I that the blue

So afraid was I that the blue
would drift past
the sun, and the interminable
gloomy forests

over which the clouds
dissolve in shadow
would reinforce
me in my black biliousness -

but now and then visible
sun, I ask you straight out:
what is my interminable
somberness all about?

Zo bang was ik dat het blauw

Zo bang was ik dat het blauw
aan de zon voorbij zou
drijven, de onafzienbare
donkere bossen

waarover de wolken
in schaduw oplossen
mij in mijn zwartgalligheid
zouden stijven -

maar nu en dan zichtbare
zon, u vraag ik met klem:
waar is toch mijn onafzienbare
somberheid om?
