TIME AND EXPERTISE
At the communal buffet following
the country’s biggest poetry festival
there was a table where all of the older poets
were drinking kopstootjes together
Judith Herzberg, Antjie Krog and Charles Bernstein
a little glass of jenever in front of each of them
On my side of the room with all the younger poets
incredible plans were being made
A transcontinental lecture series
about which we would be in touch via email
and I thought, O, what I would give
to one day sit at that table over there with the older poets
In some lifestyle magazine they’ll ask me
as they ask all women of a certain age
are you worried about getting old?
And I would say, are you crazy
decay means progress to me
Not as in ripening, which implies a period
of prolonged waiting until you can
do what you were always meant to do, but rather as an indication
that you’ve been doing that very thing all along – living
that is, and given the correlation
between time and expertise
you’ve been getting ever better at it
Now, for example, you simply know
which people are the ones
worth spending an entire evening with
The people who believe so strongly in the power of art
that they hang forbidden posters in rain-soaked alleyways
The people who care so much about poetry
that they make sure poets get to drink for free
Because as long as there are drinking, dancing poets
as well as poets who retreat to their hotel rooms
the second the applause begins
it is worth getting old
It could be that I’m remembering it wrong
and we were all on the orange juice that day
but nonetheless, this holds:
Political art across the town squares of Europe
A glass of something strong for those who need it
