Poem
Mieke van Zonneveld
IN THE SHOWER
She unhooks my drip and I get up and walk. The blood hangs waiting while I hold her hand
and take a step towards the bathroom.
Never had my body been this pale and smooth.
She seats me on a stool beneath the pelting water.
Phantom pleasure, I’m wagging my cropped tail.
She wakes, she does not leave. Only when I have to pee
in a tray and even then: her gaze waits round the corner.
Your tongue provides no barricade as blood capitulates.
I am a girl who gives herself a wash, a contaminated
swamp but most of all a dog awaiting its owner.
She tells me to get up, dries me down and puts me on a leash.
