DOUBLE MIRROR
Sitting between my motherand my daughter, suddenly I trembled,
like a man looking in two mirrors at once.
An equal distance from death
and birth, I know the body is unfathomable
and spirit will not reveal its secret to me.
Here my mother stands and walks, and I
gaze at her back. Here my daughter laughs,
the laughter of the world to come.

המראה הכפולה
בְּשָּׁעָה שֶׁאֲנִי יוֹשֵׁב בֵּין אִמִּי
לְבֵין הַיַּלְדָּה, אֲנִי פִּתְאוֹם נִרְעָד,
כְּאָדָם הַמַּבִּיט בִּשְׁתֵּי מַרְאוֹת בְּבַת אַחַת.
קָרוֹב בְּאוֹתָהּ הַמִּדָּה אֶל הַמָּוֶת
וְאֶל הַלֵּדָה, אֲנִי יוֹדֵעַ כִּי לֹא יִפָּתֵר הַגּוּף
וְלֹא תְּגַלֶּה לִי הָרוּחַ אֶת סוֹדָה.
וְהִנֵּה אִמִּי קָמָה וְהוֹלֶכֶת, וַאֲנִי
מַבִּיט בְּגַבָּה. וְהִנֵּה ּבִּתִּי צוֹחֶקֶת,
אֶת צְחוֹק הָעוֹלָם הַבָּא.
לְבֵין הַיַּלְדָּה, אֲנִי פִּתְאוֹם נִרְעָד,
כְּאָדָם הַמַּבִּיט בִּשְׁתֵּי מַרְאוֹת בְּבַת אַחַת.
