Nachoem M. Wijnberg

Evening

Cavafy writes about a young man
who didn’t yet know what kind of career he wanted,
but thought that he still had ten more years
of being handsome enough to be let in where he stood outside in front of the door
in the evening.

He was a customer there,
but thought that he would still be handsome enough for that
for ten more years.

Cavafy writes somewhere else that he is moved
by a detail in the coronation of John Cantacuzenus and Irene, daughter of Andronikos Asan.

He can say that,
just as he says that it’s almost evening.

If colored glass instead of gems
symbolizes what is appropriate to have
on the occasion of a coronation or a marriage
that is made perfect
by holding the lightest possible crowns above the heads of the bride and groom,
what is then appropriate to have?

Avond

Avond
