SILENUS AT THE RAILWAY STATION
Lying on one side, with an awkward elbow
leaning on the cement and his head
tipped back, he sleeps. Knees bent double,
feet against his arse, airing his big belly,
mouth open to the sky, squat nosed.
This is the work of two or three litres.
If he were marble he would be displayed
in a museum in Rome, London or Paris
as an example of Hellenistic art.
And the flies wouldn’t fuss him.
SILENUS OP HET STATION
Op zijn zij, met één elleboog ongemakkelijk
op het cement en zijn hoofd
achterover, slaapt hij. Opgetrokken knieën,
voeten tegen de kont, een enorme blote buik,
open mond naar de hemel, stompe neus.
Het werk van twee of drie literpakken.
Was hij van marmer, dan werd hij tentoongesteld
in een museum in Rome, Londen of Parijs
als een voorbeeld van hellenistische kunst.
En zouden de vliegen hem met rust laten.
SILENO EN LA ESTACIÓN DE FERROCARRIL
Acostado de lado, con un codo incómodo
apoyado en el cemento y la cabeza
tirada hacia atrás, duerme. Rodillas dobladas,
pies contra el culo, al aire la panza enorme,
boca abierta al cielo, chata nariz.
Esto es obra de dos o tres tetra-brik.
Si fuera de mármol estaría expuesto
en un museo de Roma, Londres o París
como ejemplo de arte helenístico.
Y no le molestarían las moscas.
