Poem
Gilad Meiri
WE CAME TO VIOLATE THE LAND
God of building violations hearour application
we the undersigned
people in apartments
in housing blocks
in projects
approach You
to approve our building plans
and permit us our excesses
God of building violations listen
for a second
we broke through the wall
in our sorry rooms
to make a window and a door
we closed a porch
overbuilt
a few feet
for the sake of our own welfare
God of building violations listen
for heaven’s sake
informers inspectors licenses levies shelters fees and fines
God of building violations hear
our oppression
