Biography
Fiama Hasse Pais Brandão was born in Lisbon in 1938. Not only a poet, she was also a playwright, fiction writer, translator and essayist.
Through translations from German, English and French, she contributed towards the diffusion in Portugal of authors such as John Updike, Bertold Brecht, Antonin Artaud, Novalis and Anton Chekhov. In addition, she did some historical and literary research on Portugal in the 16th century. She has also been acclaimed for her translation of the biblical Song of Songs. Like other poets of her generation, Fiama Hasse Pais Brandão actively participated in the 'Poesia 61' movement, which revolutionised Portuguese poetic language and she served as one of the leading voices of contemporary Portuguese poetry.
