Solomon Ibn Gabirol

Biography

Solomon Ibn Gabirol, one of the greatest liturgical poets of the Middle Ages, was a Hebrew poet whose entire life was spent in Spain. He was born in Málaga in Andalusia in the third decade of the 11th century and died approximately thirty years later in Valencia.

Left fatherless at a young age, Ibn Gabirol began his way as a writer in a youth that bore the marks of isolation and illness. His poetry combines the secular and the devotional, faith in biblical writings and a deep interest in Greek philosophy. The power of his work has not dimmed over the nearly thousand years since it was written.
