Poem
Henrik Nordbrandt
WHEN SOMEBODY DIES
When somebody dieshis surroundings remain:
The distant mountains
the houses in the block
and the Sunday road which
passes over a wooden bridge
just before leaving the town.
And the spring sunshine
which in early afternoon
reaches a shelf with books
and magazines which doubtlessly
once were new.
It’s not the least bit strange.
Even so, I’ve often
wondered about it.
WANNEER EEN MENS STERFT
Wanneer een mens sterftblijft zijn omgeving achter:
De bergen in de verte
de huizen van de buurt
en de weg die ’s zondags
over een houten brug loopt
net voor hij de stad verlaat
En de voorjaarszon
die vroeg in de middag
een plank met boeken
en tijdschriften bereikt, die ongetwijfeld
ooit nieuw waren.
Dat is beslist niet vreemd.
Het heeft mij niettemin
vaak verbaasd.
NÅR ET MENNESKE DØR
Når et menneske dørbliver dets omgivelser tilbage:
Bjergene i det fjerne
kvarterets huse
og vejen som om søndagen
går over en træbro
lige inden den fører ud af byen.
Og forårssolskinnet
som lidt ud på eftermiddagen
når en hylde med bøger
og tidsskrifter, som uden tvivl
engang var nye.
Det er ikke spor mærkeligt.
Men det har ikke desto mindre
ofte undret mig.
