An empty Greek restaurant
An empty Greek restaurant. Peoplego by, Germans, Swabians and others,
music doesn’t play here.
The name of the restaurant is MYTHOS.
A Greek man brings food. The pieces of meat
have been carved into thin slices, crisp pork,
salad and red rice. I look out the window,
eat, glance at my plate and
then I see: Greek characters.
Gyros. Poleites. Mesogaios. Helos.
Every piece of meat has a name on it.
These are, of course, Odysseus’s men,
turned into swine by Circe. Now
their flesh has finally reached mine, too.
The Greek man comes, smiles, waters
the orchids from a watering can, PHALAENOPSIS. MYTHOS.

Een leeg Grieks restaurant
Een leeg Grieks restaurant. Er lopen mensenlangs, Duitsers, Schwaben en wat
niet al, er wordt geen muziek gespeeld.
Het restaurant heet MYTHOS.
Een Griek brengt het eten. Fijngesneden
reepjes vlees, knapperig varkensvlees,
salade en rode rijst. Ik kijk uit het raam,
eet, werp een blik op mijn bord en
zie plotseling: Griekse letters.
Gyros. Poleites. Mesogaios. Helos.
Op elk reepje vlees staat een naam.
Natuurlijk, dat zijn de mannen van Odysseus,
die Circe in varkens had veranderd. Nu
is hun vel uiteindelijk ook bij mij aangekomen.
De Griek komt, glimlacht, geeft
de orchidee water uit een kan, PHALAENOPSIS. MYTHOS.

Tühi kreeka restoran. Lähevad mööda
inimesed, sakslased, švaabid ja kes
veel, muusikat siin ei mängi.
Restorani nimi on MYTHOS.
Kreeklane toob süüa. Õhukesteks viiludeks
lõigatud lihatükid, krõbe sealiha,
salat ja punane riis. Vaatan aknast välja,
söön, heidan pilgu taldrikule ja
äkki näen: kreeka tähed.
Gyros. Poleites. Mesogaios. Helos.
Iga lihatüki peal on nimi.
Muidugi, need on ju Odysseuse mehed,
kelle Kirke sigadeks muutis. Nüüd
on nende ihu viimaks minunigi jõudnud.
Kreeklane tuleb, naeratab, kastab
kastekannust orhideed, PHALAENOPSIS. MYTHOS.
