Robert Creeley, 1926-2005
According to a press statement of the Academy of American Poets, renowned poet Robert Creeley died this morning in Odessa, Texas, at the age of 78. Creeley, who published more than 60 books of poetry, was a prominent representative of the Black Mountain school of poetry. A former editor of the Black Mountain Review, New York State Poet Laureate and Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets, he was the recipient of many awards. Mario Luzi, 1914-2005
Mario Luzi, one of the greatest Italian poets of his generation, died on Monday, February 28, at his home in Florence. The poet, who "caused a storm earlier this year by comparing Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi to Mussolini," according to an obituary in the New York Times, was a life senator in the Italian Parliament – an honour only very rarely bestowed. Luzi’s first collected poems, La Barca, appeared in 1935.
