Master classes in reading from the Dutch Poet Laureate & friends
Say ‘Hello, Poetry!’ through Netherlands & Belgium
December 14, 2015
With presentations from the guest poets and a wide selection of poems to lay on the examination table, this master class series ‘Hallo Gedicht!’ (Hello, Poetry!) promises a crash course in how to read poems, as well as a solid introduction to Dutch-language poetry across the last half-century. Most of the poems to be discussed are available in the anthology Je bent mijn liefste woord (You are my dearest word), for which Vegter has selected poems – from Els Moors, Tonnus Oosterhoff, Peter Verhelst, Gerrit Kouwenaar, Hans Favery and many more – that address life’s most noteworthy occasions.
Each ‘Hallo Gedicht!’ session will include analyses of three poems: first by Vegter, then by a guest poet, and finally by all together. Eventually these analyses will be collected as a textbook, to be presented on 22 November 2016, during the National Day of Literary Education.
28 January (Poetry Day) until 25 May 2016 in Groningen, Rotterdam, Arnhem, Leeuwarden, Middelburg, Utrecht, Assen, Almere, Amsterdam, Eindhoven, Maastricht, Deventer, The Hague and Ghent

How to bring a broader public and poetry closer together? The Netherlands’ Poet Laureate, Anne Vegter, will be traveling from province to province to read poems alongside lovers and skeptics, experts and dabblers, alike. Accompanied by some of the most buzzed-about Dutch-language poets today – Vrouwkje Tuinman, Ellen Deckwitz, Charles Ducal, Maarten van der Graaff, Tsead Bruinja and 2016 VSB Poetry Prize nominee Maud Vanhauwaert – Vegter will offer a personable and energetic master class to guide readers, in the span of an hour, from ‘What is this?’ to ‘Wow, I get it!’
As Vegter writes,
A poem is an intrument with which you sharpen your gaze on the world.
It forces you to look simultaneously inside and out . . .
Read, read, read poetry!
It forces you to look simultaneously inside and out . . .
Read, read, read poetry!

My goal is to ignite a fire that drags readers to the heart of language, where thinking, feeling and desire merge into the compact ‘energy bomb’ of a poem.
