Poetry translation for enthusiasts of all levels

In Other Words 2015

March 04, 2015
From 9-13 June, 2015, Poetry International once again brings approximately 20 of the most notable contemporary poets from all over the world to Rotterdam for the 46th Poetry International Festival. This also means it is time for a new edition of the translation project In Other Words. From 12 March onwards, you will be able to find online the first poems from this year’s festival poets for the project, which are in German, English, Norwegian, Russian, Spanish and Dutch. Not only can you translate these into Dutch and English, but other languages as well. Sign up, download your favourite poems, and you are ready to go! On Thursday, 11 June, during the festival, workshops will also take place, during which you can discuss your translations in person with the poets and their festival translators.

Get started immediately!

Via the translation project In Other Words, Poetry International cordially invites enthusiasts of language, poetry and translation to dive into translating the poems of festival poets. After all, translating poetry is not reserved for professionals only. Anyone who wants to immerse themselves in the wonderful world of language is more than welcome at In Other Words. This year, especially, the staff at Poetry International have selected a number of poems with which translators of all levels can get started right away. You can participate in In Other Words in two ways:

* Translating independently & possible discussion on Facebook
You independently start a translation at home and partake in the discussions on our Facebook page (in English or Dutch). This way you get to touch upon both literary translation and get feedback from and form a community with fellow participants. You get to choose which poet and which poems you translate; focus on the discussions of the poems that appeal to you the most.

* Translating independently & participation in the festival workshop
As above, you independently start a translation at home and partake in discussions on our Facebook page. Additionally, you can sign up for the festival workshop in order to join your fellow translators for a discussion, in person, of your translation with the festival poet and their professional translator. Here too you select the poet and poems yourself. The workshops will take place at the Rotterdamse Schouwburg, on 11 June, 2015, during the 46th Poetry International Festival.

* Translating in a group
Alongside translating independently, it is also possible to translate in a group, together with fellow students, for instance, whether under the guidance of a instructor or not. Needless to say, you will also be able to use the Facebook forum, and you are more than welcome at the workshops, both as an individual, as well as a group.

What is remarkable about In Other Words is that you will not only learn more about literary translation, and poetry in general, but also about individual poets and the language and culture of a specific country or region. For example, it might happen that both limitations and possibilities in a certain language and culture can serve as a means to broaden your own knowledge and creative command of language. Moreover, translating also means a thorough reading of poetry, one that lays bare the relation between semantics, syntax, rhythm and sound, which will make for an extraordinary meeting with the poet and festival translator in turn.

You can meet your fellow translators in discussions or debates on the aforementioned Facebook page, which is linked to the project. Here, you can discuss each other’s translations, present each other with various issues of difficulty, or exchange thoughts on the form and meaning of poems.

Registration

Participating in In Other Words is completely free of charge and you can start at any given moment. After you have signed up you can access the poems to be translated by means of a password. Further, you will receive an invitation per email to register for the workshop on 11 June. Registering for the workshop is possible until the start of the festival. There is a maximum of 15 spots available per workshop, so the sooner you sign up, the better. Hopefully we’ll see you then!

In Other Words is meant for anyone with a love for poetry, language and translation. {segment name="maw_registratie/index" title="Register here"} and stay updated via Facebook. The translation project In Other Words is made possible by Stichting Literaire Rechten Auteurs (LIRA).
