Breyten Breytenbach in Rotterdam

September 10, 2014
South African poet and painter Breyten Breytenbach will be in Rotterdam between October 7-11. Breytenbach made frequent appearances at the Poetry International Festival between 1971-1996. During one of these visits, he christened a large tree on the Westersingel as the “Grave of an Unknown Poet,” and thereafter the tree also commonly came to be known as the “Breytenbach Tree,” or the “Poetree.” On October 8, 5 p.m., Breytenbach will unveil a plaque on the tree, commemorating its poetic significance, and will then continue to the bookstore Van Gennep for a reading and conversation with Poetry International Director Bas Kwakman.

Breytenbach is in Rotterdam at the invitation of the Centrum Beeldende Kunst Rotterdam, which recently completed the restoration of Breytenbach’s painting on the Gaffelstraat. On October 9, he will appear in conversation with Ernest van der Kwast for CBK Rotterdam’s “Z-Files: Art and the City” series. Additionally, Van der Kwast will speak with the Belgian artist Kamagurka on the work of poet/painter Lucebert, also displayed on the Gaffelstraat.

More information on these events can be found at the Boekhandel v/h Van Gennep and the Centrum Beeldende Kunst Rotterdam, as well as on Poetry International's {event id="24784" title="Dutch website"}.
