Images around ‘Place’ in Indian poetry
December 01, 2008
The students were challenged to visually interpret this poetry. They were accompanied by lecturer Max Kisman – a ’77 graduate in graphic design at the Rietveld Academy who now successfully runs his own practice in graphic design and illustration – and Frans Oosterhof, coordinator of the Image & Language department.
In poetry, texts become images. In fine art, images express more than a thousand words can say. The work of the students at the Image & Language department explores both aspects of the marriage between words and images. Image and language may origin in different worlds, but in this dialogue they have become added value to each other.

In connection with the festival theme ‘City and Country’ of the 39th Poetry International Festival 2008 which took place from 7-13 June 2008 in the Stadsschouwburg theatre, Rotterdam, Poetry International Web collaborated with second-year students of the department Image & Language of the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, School of Arts in the Netherlands, to produce short films inspired by Indian poetry from the December 2007 ‘Places’-themed issue of the Indian section of PIW.
In this issue, Indian domain editor Arundhathi Subramaniam explored the diverse ways in which an awareness of place enters poetry. Students have studied some of the works of Namdeo Dhasal, Meena Alexander, Amarjit Chandan, Anjum Hasan and Arundhathi Subramaniam. The students were challenged to visually interpret this poetry.
