Hardop wants to inspire everyone
to learn poems by heart and to recite them.
Alone or together, casually or through a gathering or competition.
To get started with declamation, Hardop offers tips from a number of poets and poetry lovers. Gerda Lenten Havertong, Joost Oomen, Lisette Ma Neza, Jasper Albinus, Rihab el Majdoubi, Philip van Rijn, Arnon Grunberg, Sam Onclin, and Babs Gons share in these videos what they find important and perform a favorite poem.
Hardop offers a large collection of Dutch poems to choose from.
1. Choose a poem
To make it easier, you’ll find a large collection of poems HERE
Find a poem that speaks to you, that touches you,
that fits a feeling or an occasion.
A poem that says yes right away while you read it.
2. What is the poem saying to you?
It can also help to write the poem out by hand first.
Then learn the poem by heart—or better yet, by heart
and soul. Record it, play it back, line by line,
stanza by stanza. Sing the poem while doing the
dishes, repeat it on your bike ride or during a walk.
Until you know it inside and out.
3. Bring the poem to life
Find the right rhythm, tempo, and tone of voice.
Think about your posture too. Perform it for your
housemates, neighbours, in your class, at work,
in a group, or for an imaginary audience.
Organize a gathering or find one to join.
4. And now
you're so excited that you’ll want to start
all over again with learning another poem by heart!
