In addition to the UK tour, the director of the Poetry Society Jules Mann, is hosting a special Poetry International Web event (invitation only) on 18th October at the Poetry Society. Arundhathi Subramaniam will interview the UK editors (including Anne Born and Andrew Bailey) about the poems they have selected, and the poetry that they would like to see read by a global audience. Poetry International Web’s UK partner, the Poetry Society, have invited the editor of the India domain, poet and journalist, Arundhathi Subramaniam, on a national tour. Throughout October 2006, Arundhathi Subramaniam will visit six cities around the UK. In addition to reading her own engaging poetry, these events will feature Arundhathi Subramaniam discussing India’s contemporary culture through the poems she has selected for the site, the many languages from which they are drawn, and the significance of these poems being translated into English – often for the first time. The tour is presented in association with Poetry International Web, with support from Visiting Arts and the British Council.
Arundhathi Subramaniam is the editor of the India domain on Poetry International Web. She is a critically acclaimed young poet writing in English. Based in Mumbai, where she works as an arts journalist, she was awarded the Charles Wallace Fellowship at the University of Sterling in 2003. Her books include On Cleaning Bookshelves (Allied, 2001) and Where I live (Allied, 2005). She co-edited Confronting Love (Penguin, 2001), an anthology of contemporary Indian love poems in English.For more information, visit www.poetrysociety.org.uk.
