Live streaming: Poetry World Slampionship 2005

September 20, 2006
During the Poetry International Festival 2005, Rotterdam provided the stage for the ‘Poetry International World Slampionship’. Eight winners of national contests in 2004 from The Nederlands, USA, South Africa, Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, Sweden and Germany competed for the World Slampion title in a qualifying round and a final.
The poetry slam is a phenomenon that blew over from the United States in the 1980s and has by now firmly established itself in Europe. It has gained great popularity in the Netherlands, with slams being staged around the country. During slam contests, performing poets try to outdo one another by the impact of their words and presentation. It is the combination of theatrical and literary elements that make poetry slams such exciting events.

The participants in the 2nd Poetry International World Slampionship were:
Sven Ariaans (The Netherlands)
Sonya Renee (U.S.A.)
Ewok (South-Africa)
Mitchel Joe (Australia)
Brendan McLeod (Canada)
Kat Francoise (United Kingdom)
Henry Bowers (Sweden)
Tobias Borke (Germany)

In a unique initiative, called Rotterdam Stroomt, we were able to make a live streaming event of the Poetry International Slampionship. Watch it here!
