Jerzy Ficowski, Poland’s borderland poet
Jerzy Ficowski, who has died aged 81, was Poland's prominent but unorthodox poet, a fervent Christian who celebrated Polish Roma culture and memorialised in verse the Jewish victims of the Holocaust. He was respected for his lifelong contribution to the struggle to free his homeland, first as a youngster during the Nazi occupation, then as a patron of, and participant in, the human rights campaign against communist rule.

Twice Poet Laureate, Stanley Kunitz dies at 100
“It's strange, but give him time. A hundred years or so. He's a patient man. He won't mind waiting.” So said W.H. Auden about the reputation of the American poet Stanley Kunitz, who indeed lived to 100 and found himself esteemed as a distinctive metaphysical voice.

Georg Büchner Literary Prize for Oskar Pastior
The Deutsche Akademie für Sprache und Dichtung (German Academy for Language and Literature) in Darmstadt decided to award the 2006 Georg Büchner Prize to poet Oskar Pastior. Germany's most respected and generous literature prize, with prize money of 40,000 euros, is awarded annually. This year's laureate, Oskar Pastior, is one of Germany's most famous contemporary poets.
