Welcome to Italian poetry - December 2005

Welcome! The poet of the new Italian issue is Andrea Raos, an author who takes us far away from the usual western settings and shows us Japanese landscapes and atmospheres. While the eastern element – in the well-chosen selection of images and in the use of a concise, elegant and visual language – appears throughout Raos’ production, the poems we propose here are those in which the Japanese tone and flavour are more clearly noticeable. We recognize all the elements: the pond, the flowers, the herons, the carps sliding under the surface of the water.
Apart from the eastern iconography, Raos’ poetry speaks to us of memory and loss, recollection and death. Everything is expressed with an essential and never obvious language because, according to fellow-poet Franco Buffoni, Raos uses “a stratified, complex, refined writing that focuses on speculation and ethics while being careful to control and delete every imperfection, every ‘explanation’”. We hope you’ll enjoy the reading.
