Ted Hughes: 'I'd rather eat mud than live in America'

An archive of 41 previously unseen letters written by Ted Hughes has been acquired by the British Library, along with 35 draft poems and 18 pages of an unnamed draft play.
In one of the letters, written shortly after moving to Massachusetts with his first wife, the American poet Sylvia Plath, in 1957, he said that he would rather “eat mud” than continue to be exposed to American consumerism.
