English PEN launches Atlas of World Literature

February 05, 2009
Monday 9 February 2009 marks the official launch of a major new initiative from English PEN, the founding centre of the worldwide writers’ association. The PEN Atlas of World Literature is a unique online resource, linking readers, writers and publishers around the world, funded by Arts Council England and the Open Society Institute.
There is a strong focus on writing from the Arab region and the site is launching with new work from Palestinian writers, some appearing in English for the first time. Recent posts on the PEN Atlas blog have focused on the crisis in Gaza, highlighting the way in which internet publishing and social networking are playing a vital role in providing balanced information from that region, as well as a focus on Palestinian writers and literature.

PEN’s founding vision is of the power of literature as a means of intercultural dialogue. English PEN is the founding centre of the worldwide writers’ association, International PEN, which has 145 centres in 104 countries.
