Mapping the Landscape of Contemporary Poetry

1 november 2006
Programmed to coincide with Arundhathi Subramaniam's tour of England, the Poetry Society held an event on 18th October in London focussing on PIW magazine. The central discussion revolved around how editors of a country’s domain "map the landscape" of contemporary poetry in their country. An audio recording of the event will be available on the site shortly.

The speakers on the discussion panel are listed below; other voices from the audience included Ruth Borthwick, Stephen Watts, Jo Shapcott, John Agard, Malika Booker and Corine Vloet..
Anne Born, poet, editor, critic and award-winning translator of Danish, Swedish and Norwegian literature (winning this year’s Independent Foreign Fiction prize). She was a guest editor for one of our first issues of PIW.
Andrew Bailey is education co-ordinator at the Poetry Society, runs the Society’s Prize for European Poetry Translation, and is managing editor for the UK pages of PIW; he also works part time with the Poetry Archive project, and is a practicing poet.
Arundhathi Subramaniam is editor of the India domain for PIW. A writer on the performing arts and literature, she has been a literary columnist and dance critic and is also a creative consultant at the National Centre for the Performing Arts, Bombay, where she is in charge of an interactive arts forum, Chauraha. Arundhathi is also a fine poet, and has been programmed as such in several literary festivals this month.
Michele Hutchison is the overall editor of PIW. Her background is in literary publishing and she currently divides her time between editing PIW and working as a book editor, agent and translator.
Jules Mann is Director of the Poetry Society of Britain.
