18 januari 2006
A meeting took place Thursday evening (April 12, 2003) in Rabat in homage to the famous Greek poet Constantine cavafy, on the joint initiative of the Embassy of Greece at Morocco, the Hellenic Foundation for Culture and the Rabat French Institute
The evening was animated by the philologist literary critic Mrs. Alkistis soulogianni, Director of Cultural relations in the Hellenic ministry of Culture.

The Moroccan poet and writer Bensalem himmich, who took part in this homage, established a comparison between the Greek poet Constantine Cavafy and the great Arab poet al-Mutanabbi, concluding that there exists "affinities of a spiritual nature" between the two poets.

Himmich also raised the absence in the works of Constantine cavafy of international events such as the First World War or Greece's loss of Izmir , and was astonished that the Greek poet did not learn Arabic during his long stay in Egypt and that he did not have contacts with the great Egyptian poets of his time such as Ahmed chawki and Khalil matrane.

Constantine Cavafy's works include Voice, Candles,Walls,Waiting for the Barbarians, Trojans, Oaths, Ambassadors of Alexandria and Tomb of Lanis. His poems were translated into Arabic, German, English, French, Italian, Spanish, Dutch, Portuguese and Russian.

Constantine Cavafy was born on April 29, 1863 in Alexandria.
