Chinese editor Simon Patton confessed he always thought of {id="974" title="Wang Xiaoni"} as a ‘minor’ poet, loosely belonging to the generation of so-called ‘obscure’ poets. Until he read her work. Characterized by an uncommon gravity of purpose, which Wang Xiaoni explicitly declared in a statement in a literary magazine, her poetry distinguishes itself from that of other members of her generation by its compassion and directness.
{id="5380" title="Lionel Abrahams"}, who sadly passed away last week, is one of two new poets on the South-African domain this month. "His literary biography is that of a champion of individual consciousness and of liberal values – values that are not always fashionable," writes our South-African editor. Abrahams is accompanied in the South-African magazine by {id="5374" title="Finuala Dowling"}, situates her poems firmly within the microcosmos of her own life.
Finally, we’re happy to announce that the Australian magazine presents no less than eight new poets this month, showing the width and depth of poetry on the continent with poems by people like {id="675" title="John Tranter"} and {id="668" title="Dorothy Porter"}. The eight new poets, long-awaited and eagerly ancitipated, were selected by our new Australian editor Michael Brennan.
Habitually transgressing all boundaries of art and literature, Dutch poet Tonnus Oosterhoff has provided us with a world premiere on PIW this month. Two of his fascinating ‘Bewegende gedichten’ (Poems in Motion) have been translated especially for this site. Not just moving in the way one usually expects of poetry, Oosterhoff’s words move over the page slowly, forming a poem that changes as we watch.
His superbly imaginative, experimental and witty poetry exemplifies what fellow-poet Rob Schouten called Oosterhoff’s poetic credo, in this {id="4037" title="biographical article"}: "against the dominance of reason". In another world premiere, the equally experimental, minimalistic, one-word-a-line poems of French poet {id="2041" title="Joseph Julien Guglielmi"} are published here for the first time.
