Calligraphy and Zimbabwean poetry
9 september 2010
As a professional lettering artist and trained traditional calligrapher, with exhibitions in UK and abroad, I paint, inscribe and draw with words so am always looking for new sources of inspiration.
Discovering the wealth of poems on International Poetry, Zimbabwe website I eventually chose the words of Beaven Tapureta and Mybruthazkeepa. I responded intuitively to the meaning of the words, creating a visual interpretation of the poems in my artwork. The poets granted permission for their poems to be on exhibition in London. To date, one piece has been sold, some of the proceeds of which will go directly to the poet.
It has been a privilege working on this project with these talented poets. I hope, in a small way, it will help to widen the audience of Zimbabwe poets in UK.
The works can be seen here.
