Jens Meijen

(Belgium, 1996)

Poet, writer, researcher and editor Jens Meijen, in De STAAT van de POËZIE / Uitreiking C. Buddingh'-prijs 2022, lets his gaze wander over the Dutch-language landscape of poetry with an undoubtedly astute column. In 2019 his first book of poetry appeared, Xenomorph (De Bezige Bij), with which he immediately won the C. Buddingh'-prijs 2020 for best Dutch-language debut. In 2021 his debut novel De Lichtjaren (The Light Years) was published. Soon he will publish another book of poetry, a non-fiction book and a novel.

He is also a journalist and literary critic for HUMO and De Morgen and a member of the core editorial staff of literary magazine DW B. He has previously published in literary magazines such as De Revisor, Het Liegend Konijn, deFusie, Hard//hoofd and Deus Ex Machina. In 2016, he was elected the first Young Poet Laureate of Belgium.

Jens Meijen graduated as a literary scholar and works as a doctoral researcher in political science at KU Leuven. His research mainly focuses on European populism, digitalization and diplomacy. With a study on European cultural policy in Eastern Europe, he won the Wilfried Martens Thesis Prize 2020. From 2022 to 2024 he is a Europaeum Scholar at the University of Oxford, among others.
